As a child born in South Africa one has multiple ancestors. We know these different ancestries intimately and at times we are in overlapping conversations with them and they take turns in looking after us. I started documenting my immediate family in Orange Farm in 2017 and it was in that time that I came to know of my multiple genealogies. Amaqwathi family project made realize that I needed to photograph all my family members and I could feel the incomplete feeling that my images embodied. This ongoing project of photographing my family is called Amaqhwati, which is my family's clan name.
Through working on the project I have learned about the roots of my lineage which is as far reaching as eNcobo in the Eastern Cape and eMsinga, Kwa-Zulu Natal, where my extended paternal family currently resides. I still have unconsolidated traces and maps that I want piece together - I find myself needing to know more. Every family member I encounter and photograph tells me about a part of my family history or member that I have not met. I want to know more.
